England win the World Cup – virtually

England win the World Cup – in a virtual World Cup tournament hosted by Football Superstars a massively multi-player online (MMO) game. Although England crashed out of the 2010 South Africa World Cup at the hands of the Germany, this prestigious tournament win will give fans of English sport something to cheer about.

During the group stages, England faced off against their old rivals Germany. The Germans were an intimidating prospect, reaching the semi-finals in both previous World Cup events, but fate was not smiling on them that night. The Germans were held at bay with a 1-1 draw against England, and then the side fell afoul of the Ukrainian team who nabbed a 2-1 win, knocking team Germany out of the World Cup group stages.

As England eased through the finals, it was now time for bitter rivals Portugal and England to face each other in the Semi Finals. Bolstered by the 9-1 Quarter-Final win over Lithuania, England looked in no mood to take prisoners and were quick out of the blocks creating attacking chances throughout the game. A fierce midfield battle, which characterised the Semi-Final match, was ended as England scored more goals to seal the fate of the Portuguese resulting in a 4-2 result at full time.
England faced the former champions Russia in the World Cup Final, which held much promise for a superb match. Things got off to a bad start for the Russian team in under a minute as they conceded an easy goal.

The English quickly faced retaliation for a difficult game ahead. A goal kick followed up by a couple of knock on headers from the Russian forwards forced the English keeper to make a risky run out of his box to clear the ball, but such temerity was punished by the Russian attacking midfielder Aptimist to block the clearance and score a goal. As if to compensate, England's Acett delivered similar punishment to the Russian keeper by intercepting a hasty clearance and scoring a goal. More goals followed, despite a couple of excellent breaks in the second half, leaving the exhausted Russian team unable to regain control of the game. The tension of their previous games, combined with the lateness of the hour had taken its toll on the Russian squad.

At the final whistle, England became the new world champions of the Football Superstars PMC World Cup for the first time.

"The World Cup event was, without doubt, the largest event have ever hosted in Football Superstars and the level of dedication and organisation from the teams involved was superb throughout. There were some truly nail-biting games, and some real shocks." commented Andrew Ruddick, CyberSports Community Manager, he continued

"The event was a huge success and we would like to thank every single team and player who took part, as well as give massive congratulations to the English team for playing a superb tournament."

Future world cup tournaments are being held later this year.
