In a remarkable debut novel – dramatic, eloquent, and wholly original – Wanda Arrington Akorede fuses a story that tests modern sensibility with the drama and reality of today’s African culture. She vividly brings to life the characters: two women, and one man who is eventually forced to make an agonizing and fateful choice.

The novels protagonist, Janice Bordeaux is ready for love and romance. She meets and marries a Nigerian who takes her across the ocean to Africa to a new and exciting life. But her blissful happiness is about to end when after a few weeks in Nigeria; she is told that her husband already has a wife!

Janice’s life changes dramatically when she discovers she is pregnant and has to decide whether to remain married to her husband and share her life with him and his other wife. Janice draws on the strength of her ancestors and tries to live in polygamy according to his rules, rather than return home.

Her love for Femi is very passionate and deep. Janice hopes that one day he will come to his senses and see that she is the only woman that he needs. But being faced with a strongly male dominated society and living in a strange and sometimes overwhelming country, she finds it difficult to deal with her husband’s infidelity. Lola on the other hand is ready to fight the battle of her life to remain married to him.

“As a novel, “The Other Wife” will appeal to everyone", says Ms. Arrington Akorede. “The theme has all the ingredients of a Shakespearean drama. A lot of the emotional trauma could have been avoided if Janice had asked questions about her husband’s culture. There is not a person alive that cannot feel the pain that both women experience by being in love and married to the same man at the same time.”

Ms. Arrington Akorede is married to a Nigerian and lived in Nigeria for ten years. She is completing work on her Masters Degree in counseling/psychology. She has completed the second book in “The Other Wife” trilogy titled “Difficult Choices.” The two books are being released simultaneously. She has several other fictional works that will follow, “Jamaica Blue,” “The Diplomats Wife,” and “The Charm Bracelet.”

Ms. Arrington Akorede is also a writer of children’s books; the first one, “The Closet,” was published in 2000 and “Aisha & Kari,” will be released this year. Ms. Arrington Akorede says. “I have had the opportunity to visit most of the exotic places in which “The Other Wife” takes place.
