Hotels-Paris.co.uk - Paris prepares for the Fete de Ganesh

August 07, 2010 (PRLEAP.COM) Travel News
While London celebrates the Notting Hill Carnival over the August bank holiday weekend, people staying in Paris will be heading to the Fete de Ganesh.

This annual event is similar to the London carnival in that it brings huge crowds out onto the streets for a public party, although the Paris event is a celebration of Indian rather than Caribbean culture.

Based in the French capital's Little India district, which can be found in the vicinity of the Gare du Nord, the Fete de Ganesh features a colourful procession through the 18th arrondissement.

Travellers can experience the festivities for themselves by booking a hotel in Paris and heading to the Sri Manicka Vinayakar Alayam Temple on Sunday August 29th.

The parade is set to begin there at approximately 10:30 local time before winding its way through the streets until 15:00.

An ornate chariot carrying an image of the Hindu god Ganesh provides the main focus of the procession, with devotees trailing the vehicle and singing religious songs.

Coconuts are traditionally cracked open by the followers as Ganesh makes his way through the crowds lining the streets.

The event, which is free to attend, is preceded by a special ceremony at the temple.

For more information on this event, visit the Fete de Ganesh website or contact the temple on (+33) 01 40 34 21 89.
