King Bhumibol Adulyadej is the ninth king of Thailand, also known as King Rama IX, and is the longest reigning king in the world. Taking to the throne in 1946 on 9th June, the king is revered by Thai people for his work for the country and the many charities he has helped.

On 5th December, which is also known as Father's Day, the country will be decorated with flags and the king's portraits within homes and businesses everywhere. The day is a public holiday and visitors to Krabi can join in the celebrations as people pay homage to the king.

People staying in Krabi hotels can see a number of special concerts taking place on the island where audiences will be entertained with traditional Thai dance and music such as Molam and country music. Many people also use the time to visit temples in the area and pay respect and to give monks food donations. Many temples also put up large portraits of the king and special services and sermons are conducted on the day.

Lek Boonlert, marketing head at DirectRooms.com commented: "The king's birthday is an important time for all Thais and many will be using the national holiday to visit friends and family. Hotels in Krabi will be busier as people head to the island for a break and so it's advisable to book accommodation early around the king's birthday."
