LateRooms.com - Explore The Future of Tradition in Munich

December 19, 2010 (PRLEAP.COM) Travel News
LateRooms.com reports tourists who are yet to see The Future of Tradition, Munich's major exhibition of Islamic art and artefacts, still have time to catch the show.

Taking place at the famous Haus der Kunst museum in the Bavarian capital, the display opened its doors in September and will run until January 9th 2011.

Inspired by a groundbreaking exhibition that was held in Munich 100 years ago, the event combines contemporary works by Islamic artists with some of the items from the original collection.

Its full title - The Future of Tradition, The Tradition of Future - gives a clue about the aims of the exhibition in establishing a line of continuity between the conventional and the innovative.

A total of 30 objects from the 1910 exhibition can be seen at the Haus der Kunst, alongside paintings, drawings, photography, sculptures, fashion designs and jewellery by contemporary artists.

Contributors were asked to fill the space with their reactions to the original show and explore their own approaches to Islam in the 21st century.

People who have previously stayed in Munich hotels may already by familiar with the Haus der Kunst, as it is one of the city's most well-known and prestigious cultural attractions.

Located at the southern end of the Englischer Garten, the museum was originally constructed in the 1930s as a showcase venue for the art of the Third Reich.

It was used by US forces as an officers' mess after the second world war, when the building became known among soldiers as P1 due to an abbreviation of its Prinzregentenstrasse address.

The Haus der Kunst is open between 10:00 and 20:00 local time everyday, except on Thursdays when it does not shut until 22:00.
