February 5, 2011—-Attorney Michael P. Ehline believes it is important for parents to realize the possible dangers to their children when riding an escalator. Recently in Van Nuys, California according to the cities fire spokesman Brian Humphrey a 17 month old boy that was riding an escalator in the Van Nuys Courthouse was injured.

The 17 month old had his in the comb and groove of the foot tread. The accident occurred near the first floor bottom of the escalator in the courthouse. Fire fighters took the area of the escalator apart in search of the toddler's finger and found it approximately 90 minutes later. The toddler's finger was surgically re-attached by surgeons at Northridge Hospital Medical Center after firefighters found the finger.

Accidents of this nature are not uncommon and pose a real danger to children, which can lead to amputations and other types of injuries. There are thousands of escalators in public buildings and retail shopping areas. Not only children are at risk for being injured, if the escalator is not maintained properly and the injuries that can occur can include trip and fall accidents.
