A Day of Healing for Our Veterans on Veterans Day

Traumatology Psychologist Peter Levine says that war is the most traumatizing event known to humans. As we've seen with so many of our veterans, witnessing and anticipating the violence of combat can have long lasting effects such as Post Traumatic Stress Disorders(PTSD) and many chronic illnesses. Many veterans suffer from sort of PTSD symptoms throughout their lives. Volunteers throughout the United States are reaching out to veterans of all generations to offer free soul retrieval healing sessions on our national day of honoring their service.

As we learn more about the effects of traumatic events on people, the research shows that much of the traumatic effects impact on parts of the brain that record the experiences in the body and shuts down parts of the brain that utilize language. Trauma researchers such as Dr. Bessel van der Kolk, Boston University Medical School states that the effects of trauma often cannot be treated through verbal dialogue and may be more amenable to alternative treatments.

Jeanne Achterberg,Phd, a researcher in psychoneuroimmunology notes that in the field of psychology that which is called dissociation (experiences of witnessing oneself from outside the body), shamans call soul loss. According to Achterberg, "Soul loss is regarded as the gravest diagnosis in the shamanic nomenclature, being seen as a cause of illness and death. Yet it is not referred to at all in modern western medical books. Nevertheless, it is becoming increasingly clear that what the shaman refers to as soul loss—that is, injury to the inviolate core that is the essence of the person's being—does manifest in despair, immunological damage, and a host of other very serious disorders. It seems to follow the demise of relationships with loved ones, career, or significant attachments."

While psychology and western medicine approaches are descriptive of trauma responses such as dissociation, the nature nature of the brains response to these traumatic events do not lend themselves to talk therapy or medication. Shamanism is the oldest form of healing known to humans and has roots throughout the world. Millions of Hispanics throughout the United States,Central and South America as well as people from Africa,Southeast Asia, and other regions of the world subscribe to a belief system that presupposes the spiritual origins of disease to be equally important and essential for the healing of the body. In these communities, notions of soul loss and the need for soul retrieval is commonly accepted.
