Paintings from all over Italy can be seen at Art on the Naviglio, which takes place on Saturday May 7th and Sunday May 8th this year.

Originally conceived as a place for local artists to showcase their work, the open-air event now hosts more than 300 painters and is an annual highlight of the city's cultural calendar.

It is held on the banks of Milan's famous Naviglio Grande canal, with artworks on display between Viale Gorizia and the bridge on Via Valenza.

The exhibition area covers approximately 10,000 square metres and can be a good place for holidaymakers to pick up a bargain or choose a memento of their visit, although those who just want to browse are equally welcome.

Everything from traditional oils, acrylics and watercolours to more experimental techniques can be found at Art on the Naviglio, which is set to run from 09:00 to 18:00 local time each day.

Part of the display area is reserved for young artists and the graduates of local academies.

Local shops and restaurants remain open throughout the event, giving visitors a chance to relax and enjoy some refreshments after viewing the paintings.

Art lovers planning to book luxury hotels in Milan will find a varied selection of accommodation at LateRooms.com, which recommends the Hotel Berna Milan.
