Modern Haven Interiors, LLC, an interior design firm specializing in green and sustainable interior design, has opened its doors for business in the Kansas City market.

Owner and interior designer Shawna Hampton provides full-service custom designs from initial consultation, space planning schematic development, construction administration, purchasing management, to final installation. In addition, she offers convenient hourly consultations for simple design advice or shopping assistance and an active blog full of design tips and tricks for the do-it-yourselfer. All of Modern Haven's services are green-focused and prioritized around the latest earth-friendly furniture, finishes, and design and building methods and practices for the health and safety of clients, the Kansas City community, and the planet at large.

"It's my personal crusade to help everyone have a peaceful, organized, beautiful, and healthy home. I believe so much of our inner life is influenced by the energy of our personal spaces – the good AND the bad," says Hampton. "Not only does a home's design affect your inner life, what goes into your furniture, your floors, your walls, your draperies can harm your health and well-being. You would never deliberately feed your family poison. Why make them sleep on it? Or walk on it? Or breathe it? Yet, the materials that go into some home furnishings and finishes can be highly toxic."

Sustainability and green design has been a focus and major concern of architecture and design in the commercial and government sector for several years and is now beginning to make its way into the realm of residential design. Modern Haven Interiors is currently only one of a small handful of residential firms that offer green design knowledge to a growing number of Kansas City homeowners who care about the environment.

Hampton has solid training in the latest environmentally-friendly design practices and products. She is a member of the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) and is on track to receive her REGREEN remodeling certification (a program sponsored by the USGBC and the American Society of Interior Designers focused on green remodeling) and LEED Green Associate credentials by the fall. She attended the interior design program at Johnson County Community College.
