Girl with Monkey, a new book by Rosemary Mayo, has been released by Red Lead Press.

Rose Perkins leaves 1920s England to work in Malaya as a nurse, and she challenges snobbery and the role of women. Her story is revealed in personal letters through World Wars II, and I and beyond, and in a journal written by her daughter Iris when revisiting Malaysia in 2002. During this, questions arise about the past. She ends her trip with a visit to Changi Jail to honor Jacko, a lifelong friend of Rose and a man Iris idolized when she was a child. Here, she sees his painting, Girl with Monkey, and begins to understand a family secret.

Rosemary Mayo was born in Australia and grew up in Malaya until the age of thirteen. She obtained an RN in London and, later, an MA in English Literature at the University of Washington. She taught at community colleges in Seattle, where she lives with her husband. A section of Girl with Monkey was previously published in the Manhattan Literary Review. She has also published essays and pieces for a local arts magazine.

Girl with Monkey is a 188-page paperback with a retail price of $21.00. The ISBN is 978-1-4349-6520-2. Red Lead Press of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania published it. For more information or to request a review copy, please visit our online bookstore at www.redleadbooks.com.
