"Global Impacts of Chernobyl Radioactive Fallout", a new book by Gareth E. Gilbert, has been released by Dorrance Publishing Co., Inc.

While the Chernobyl nuclear reactor accident of 1986 is among the most well-known disasters of the twentieth century, the extent of the spread of radioactive material throughout the world is much less widely reported. In "Global Impacts of Chernobyl Radioactive Fallout," ecologist Gareth E. Gilbert provides a detailed analysis of the dissemination of radioactive fallout, aided by wind and weather patterns, that resulted in (sometimes dangerously) increased levels of radioactivity in crops and livestock in Europe, Asia, and the east and west coasts of North America. After an enlightening introduction to atomic theory and the nature of radioactivity, Gilbert goes on to systematically address the impact of the Chernobyl disaster on human food sources and the methods by which the affected countries attempted to combat the effects of radioactivity. Writing in an informative yet conversational style intended for nonscientists, Gilbert helps readers discover some of the more unexpected global consequences of the Chernobyl accident.

About the Author:
Gareth E. Gilbert was born in Fall River, Massachusetts, but has spent most of his life in Ohio. After receiving his Ph.D. in ecology from The Ohio State University, Gilbert spent thirty-five years teaching and conducting ecological research at his alma mater. Gilbert is a longtime member of the Health Physics Society and has researched environmental radioactivity at Mound National Laboratory and Oak Ridge National Laboratory. An avid reader, Gilbert was prompted to write this book to help narrow the gap in understanding of environmental radioactivity between the scientific community and the general public.
