LateRooms.com - Munich prepares for Oktoberfest 2011

August 13, 2011 (PRLEAP.COM) Travel News
The world's most famous beer festival will return to the Theresienwiese in Munich on Saturday September 17th.

Oktoberfest draws visitors from around the world, with people travelling thousands of miles to experience this huge annual celebration of Bavarian culture.

The event traditionally attracts more than five million revellers each year and continues to grow in popularity, with last year's 200th anniversary edition boosting the festival's profile once more.

Smartphone users can now find their way around the Theresienwiese - the official site of the festival - by using the Oktoberfest app.

Free to download, the app offers a map of the site and information about which beer tents are open at particular times. It also includes a beer counter, allowing visitors to monitor their alcohol consumption.

Several changes have been announced for Oktoberfest 2011, including the addition of two new rides to the fairground area - Rio Rapidos and Monster.

Meanwhile, the southern part of the festival site will once more host a "nostalgic" area featuring old rides, a traditional beer tent and folk music.

This follows the success of the 2010 event, which paid tribute to past versions of the Oktoberfest.

The organisers have confirmed that smoking will again be prohibited inside all beer tents and venues serving food this year, but most places will offer closed-off areas to accommodate smokers.

Entry to the main Oktoberfest site is free of charge, but visitors must of course pay for their drinks. The organisers have already confirmed the prices for 2011, with a litre of beer costing between €8.70 and €9.20 (£7.60 and £8.10).

People planning a trip to Oktoberfest will find a wide range of Munich hotels at LateRooms.com, which recommends the Hotel Leonardo Munich.
