Sam Winter is on vacation to Croatia from California, invited by a pen friend, Tomislav Petrović. In a café, he overhears a conversation by a group of men discussing a bank robbery. A sheet of paper with the plan of a bank is found on the floor as they leave. Sam and Tom take it to the police, and arrests are made. Later, Tom's car is booby-trapped, he is killed in the explosion, and Sam narrowly escapes with her life.

Returning later with a friend, she meets Milos Dragović. Who is he, and why does he want certain photographs so badly?
