"Useless," a new book by Smith Wood has been released by Dorrance Publishing Co., Inc.

"Useless" is the tale of Ulysses "Useless" Handel, a young boy who aspires to escape from the projects. Before he can overcome the cycle of poverty around him, he must defeat a group of bullies, a corrupt public school board, and a ring of organized crime that attempts to ensnare him in their web. Along the way, he delves into the deepest secrets of his family and finds help from unusual and surprising sources.

Smith Wood is a native of Mississippi who spent twenty years teaching in inner-city schools. He has, since his retirement, written "Beyond Childhood" (Vantage Press, 1995) in addition to Useless. When he's not writing, he enjoys golfing and fishing.

"Useless" is a 196-page paperback with a retail price of $18.00. The ISBN is 978-1-4349-1120-9. It was published by Dorrance Publishing Co., Inc of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
