One in ten New South Wales drivers has the need for speed these holidays

  September 26, 2011   Business News
(PRLEAP.COM) As the school holidays kick off, research from leading insurer GIO has found an alarming one in ten drivers are speeding along NSW roads to reach holiday destinations sooner.

"While we all understand the enthusiasm to get your holiday started as quickly as possible, some drivers are taking unnecessary risks in their race to relax," Duncan Bone, GIO spokesperson, said.

"Drivers who speed during holiday periods are risking more than double fines and demerit points. It's risky, it can be expensive and you probably won't miss that extra half an hour anyway."

While regional NSW drivers are speeding in much smaller numbers (2%) to their holiday destinations, it's a different story in Sydney.

"Sydney drivers are almost one and a half times more likely to speed during the holidays than motorists in the rest of NSW.

"Regional motorists might take that as a win against their city brethren, but in our experience at GIO, any speeding can put your family, fellow passengers, and those you share the road with at risk." Mr Bone said.

The research also shows NSW motorists are aware of the potential for risky driving during the holiday period, choosing to avoid hitting the road at all during that time.

"Unsurprisingly, about 60 per cent of NSW drivers told us they avoid driving during holiday periods because they believe the roads are more dangerous at this time," Mr Bone said.

"Rather than rushing dangerously through holiday traffic, GIO advises drivers to plan the route ahead of time and allow plenty of time for the trip, including regular rest stops.

Eliminating the need to speed will help ensure the whole family arrives safely and has a great time on holidays," Mr Bone said.

Newspoll Market & Social Research conducted an independent internet survey of 3,740 people, 18 years of age and older, across all states and territories in 2011. Collected data has been weighted in line with current ABS population demographics to ensure any extrapolation of results is representative of age sex and area.
