A new blog, Walkin' Boulder, written and photographed by a former newspaper editor, celebrates the joys of walking in her home town of Boulder, Colorado.

Boulder often tops the "Best Places in the World" lists to live, visit, work, play, eat or take a walk.

The Pedestrian Shops, a Boulder shoe retailer that also promotes walking and good health, posts the photo-rich blog on its popular website, www.comfortableshoes.com.

Sue Deans is retired after 30 years in the newspaper business as an editor and reporter, including positions as editor and vice president at both The Sun News in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, and The Daily Camera in Boulder.

The idea for the blog came a few days after she started training last summer for the Disneyland Half-Marathon in Anaheim, California, which took place on Sunday, Sept. 4, 2011. Her goal was to walk the 13.1 miles in three hours and 30 minutes, and her official time was 3:32:36. She got the medal and the T-shirt!

As she walked around Boulder prior to the race, she noticed interesting sights and decided to take pictures, which led to the idea of the blog. The first post, on Aug. 3, followed her as she retraced the route of the Bolder Boulder 10K race, held annually on Memorial Day with more than 50,000 participants this year. She plans to keep on walking and try to walk every street in Boulder eventually.

For more than 40 years the Pedestrian Shops has featured WalkWear, including the world's most comfortable brands of shoes … WalkWare, such as pedometers, walking sticks etc. … and WalkWhere, books and maps for walkers. Pedestrian's slogans include "Enjoy Life: Take A Walk" and "Get Used to Feeling Good."

Examples of Get Used to Feeling Good WalkWear are the barefoot styles Five Fingers Komodo Sport,
Merrell Barefoot Trail Glove,
and Vivobarefoot Mary Jane

A WalkWare example is the BackJoy
back orthotic.

Pedestrian Shops founder and President Richard Polk notes that the Pedestrian Shops may be the only solar-powered shoe store in the world, is considered a green business practices leader and he hopes someday to be the first retailer in the world to sell shoes without leaving a carbon footprint.

The Pedestrian Shops began doing business shortly after the first Earth Day in 1970. Its first shop was located in a repurposed 1950s bookmobile. Its first bricks and mortar location was opened in 1971 in downtown Boulder, Colorado. Its humble roots are memorable for the story of its first store fixtures, carved from tree trunks; their first months of use required daily spraying for ants. Today, 40 years later, The Pedestrian has become widely regarded as one of the world's leading retailers of comfortable shoes.
