Perst Database Moves with Mobile Enterprise App to Android Smartphones

McObject®, innovator in embedded database technology, announced that coresystems AG has expanded its use of McObject's Perst™ open source, object-oriented database system in popular mobile software for cloud-based enterprise computing. Coresystems previously deployed Perst in its coresuite mobile client for Windows-based laptops and Windows Phone 7 (WP7) devices, and now has licensed Perst for a new version of the client on Android, the world's most popular smartphone platform.

The coresuite mobile client enhances field workforce productivity by mobilizing leading enterprise resource planning (ERP) applications that are hosted in coresystems' coresuite cloud. The Perst mobile database delivers fast, reliable sorting, queries and storage on the client device, and is synchronized with the hosted master database. Perst delivers high efficiency – a critical strength, given mobile devices' limited memory and processing resources – along with complete DBMS features including ACID transactions, support for diverse database indexes (B-tree, R-tree, KD-tree, etc.), a flexible and easy-to-use API, garbage collection, full-text search and more.

Data management is a key function for coresuite mobile client. Sales and service personnel use the mobile client to access information about customers and accounts, monitor service queries, record work times and activities, and find directions using the geolocation feature on service maps, among other features. Integrated dashboards prominently display user-designated key data, such as sales totals, call lists or stock-on-hand.

"Releasing an Android mobile client makes clear business sense, given the platform's industry-leading growth numbers as well as feedback from our customers. In our earlier development on Silverlight and WP7, coresystems recognized Perst's high value as a mobile database solution. We are glad it is also available for Android, so that we can leverage our earlier experience and enhance the Android mobile client with powerful data management," said Yves Senn, coresystems CTO.

Since its introduction in 2010, thousands of field-based workers and their companies have subscribed to the coresuite mobile access technology, which coresystems provides for a monthly subscription fee of $14.90 per user. Customers in industries ranging from construction materials to school supplies and hair care products have praised the coresuite mobile client for enabling them to control costs and increase efficiency.

Coresystems has also enlarged the mobile client's potential market by expanding its range of hosted ERP packages. Initial releases mobilized SAP Business One applications. Now users can also access SAP Business All-In-One and SAP Business Suite applications, as well as Microsoft Dynamics ERP solutions.

Coresystems evaluated various commercial and open source database alternatives and chose Perst based on its features, cross-platform availability, fast performance and small footprint, Senn said. Another positive is that "there is a company, McObject, behind Perst, with professional support and services," he said.

"Applications that increase workers' productivity by mobilizing enterprise applications need an on-device DBMS. Even most database systems labeled as 'mobile' impose outsized resource demands in a smartphone environment. In contrast, Perst's efficiency frees up CPU cycles and RAM that can be used to support advanced mobile application features and accelerate performance. McObject is pleased Perst has proven a good fit with coresystems' technology and looks forward to the success of their Android product," said Chris Mureen, McObject's chief operating officer.

Perst and Perst Lite are part of McObject's family of powerful small footprint, high performance embedded database software products. The eXtremeDB® in-memory database system from McObject is used widely in devices including MP3 players, WiMAX base stations, digital TVs, telecom/network communications equipment and military/aerospace technology. Perst is available for Java and .NET, including Java ME, Android, .NET Compact Framework, Silverlight and Microsoft's Windows Phone 7 (WP7) smartphone platform.
