Savage & St. Paul Invisalign Provider Says Treatment Isn't Just for A Pretty Smile

SAVAGE, LAKEVILLE & ST. PAUL, MINNESOTA - Although appearances are important when it comes to orthodontic braces treatment, that is only one reason why adult and child orthodontics was created, said Dr. Trudy Bonvino, a Savage and St. Paul invisalign provider at Cosmopolitan Orthodontics.

The other- and perhaps more important- reason patients today are treated with metal braces or invisible,

more cosmetic options has to do with correcting the function of the teeth and jaws in children and adults.
Bonvino said orthodontic treatment provides correction in the areas of functionality and look in the following ways:

Functionality

  • Resolving the issue of incorrect bite relationships between a patient's upper and lower teeth,
  • Creating a correct relationship with upper and lower jaws.
  • Correcting the bite to allow for better chewing of food without harming a patient's hard or soft tissue.
  • Alleviating serious teeth crowding.

  • Appearance

  • Eliminating gaps between teeth that leave a patient feeling self-conscious.
  • Correcting minor crowding.

  • There is nothing wrong with a patient who has no serious orthodontic issues undergoing corrective

treatment, said pediatric orthodontics expert Dr. Bonvino.
"Some people simply want to feel confident when they smile," she said. "Having a great smile can be a true confidence booster."

Bonvino suggests parents follow the American Association of Orthodontists' recommendation and have children assessed by an orthodontist by their seventh birthday.

This is an ideal age for determining if functional issues exist that should be corrected through early treatment .

"Many problems can be corrected at an early age, which eliminates the need for treatment later in life, or requires less treatment in the future," Bonvino said.

"Frequently, no treatment is necessary at age 7. But it's recommended to have that evaluation so parents will know when, if any, future treatment is recommended."
