Information Technology professionals tipped to be in highest demand in 2012

Information technology professionals across a range of specialisations are tipped to be in highest demand of any profession in 2012, according to the 13th edition of the Global Salary Survey by international recruitment consultancy Robert Walters.

In early 2011 IT recruitment experienced a steady increase in activity as business confidence recovered. However there was a renewed sense of caution due to global financial uncertainty and many projects were put on hold. The survey is predicting a spike in demand for IT professionals as these major works are restarted.

Robert Walters' Associate Director – IT Commerce, Peter Bateson said, "We expect there to be three main drivers in IT recruitment - the commencement of on hold projects, demand from the National Broadband Network (NBN) related projects and a continued investment in mining and infrastructure. Also as many organisations' online and social networking capabilities expand, professionals with experience in online production, designing and developing will be highly sought-after. We anticipate the market to be particularly buoyant in the telecommunications, utilities, digital media and education sectors. Of all the sectors surveyed, IT professionals appear to be the most in demand across the market."

The IT market also experienced candidate shortages across the sector, particularly highly skilled business analysts, those with resources experience, and professionals with financial services experiences. Candidate shortages are expected to continue into 2012, which may constrain project deadlines. However talented individuals will benefit, able to command higher pay and better career opportunities.

Now in its 13th year, the Robert Walters' Global Salary Survey is the most comprehensive of its kind. Compiled by the company's dedicated research team and covering all 23 countries and disciplines in which Robert Walters specialises, the latest edition offers an overview of salaries and recruitment trends from 2011, as well as those expected in 2012.
