More Exercise Can Help Older Diabetics

(PRLEAP.COM) Physical fitness can help lower rates of immobility among older diabetics, according to a new study. Findings by Wake Forest University in North Carolina in America show that increased exercise and losing weight helped mobile people with type 2 diabetes stay that way, and eased severe mobility problems in others.

The research involved more than 5,000 individuals aged between 45 and 74 years-old that were all overweight or obese. It revealed that boosted physical activity and weight loss helped to keep at bay the number of older overweight diabetics who face mobility problems.

The survey, which was published in the New England Journal of Medicine, found that a 1% drop in weight cut the risk of movement complications by more than 7%. What is more, the same increase in fitness level lowered agility hazards up to 2%.

The lead researcher, Jack Rejeski, concluded that the results show how much of an important treatment it is to lose weight and escalate physical activity for mobility-related problems among people with type 2 diabetes.

It is important that diabetics across the UK are encouraged to keep their weight down to avoid developing any problems in the future. There are 2.9 million people diagnosed with diabetes in the UK and type 2 diabetes accounts for between 85 and 95% of all people with diabetes according to Diabetes UK.

It develops when the body can make some insulin but not enough, or when the insulin that is produced does not work properly; and diabetics are twice as likely to have mobility problems as other people their age.
