ANN ARBOR, MI, APRIL 2, 2012: Under a procurement contract, Evigia Systems has announced the completion of delivery of the second generation DOE/Argonne National Laboratory ARG-US RFID-based surveillance tag system utilizing Evigia's EV3 wireless sensing platform. The system has enhanced functionality to securely, continuously and autonomously track the physical locations and monitor the state of health of nuclear material packages during transportation and storage.

The integrated system, called ARG-US, consists of battery-powered RFID tags, wireless readers, an application software suite, secure databases and Web services. The tags utilize the Evigia's EV3 RFID Wireless Sensor platform with customized sensor suite for mechanical seal integrity, environmental temperature and humidity, mechanical shock/impact, radiation, and battery status.

Key features of the tags include long-life (>10 years) battery design, sizeable nonvolatile memories, and reliable long-range communication based on the ISO18000-7 international standard. The integration of a radiation sensor with the Evigia wireless platform was carried out jointly by Argonne and Evigia engineers. Evigia also provided technical support to Argonne engineers for the final system integration with the DOE's ARG-US RFID system. Development of the ARG-US system is directed and sponsored by the Department of Energy Packaging Certification Program, Office of Packaging and Transportation, Environmental Management.

When bolted on drums or placed strategically in buildings or transport vehicles, the ARG-US RFID tags report sensor information through wireless readers to the secure ARG-US system. In case of a violation of any of the preset alarm thresholds, the system can automatically and promptly alert the responsible individuals and organizations automatically. The ARG-US RFID system thus can enhance operator safety, streamline information management and inventory control, extend the robustness and lifetime maintenance cycles of storage drums and help ensure the safety, security and safeguards for nuclear materials during processing, storage and transport.
"Working with Argonne, we have delivered a modular design that gives us a single form factor allowing for future sensor expansion with, for example: neutron detector, gas sensors or pressure monitor capabilities. This makes the ARG-US system even more readily deployable and flexible when integrated in these critically important storage and transportation operations," according to Navid Yazdi, CEO of Evigia Systems.
