According to recent figures, online video advertisement in 2011 soared to a record new high of £4.8billion.

The spending on web ads and video ads was up £687million year on year which is a 14.4% rise. The study from the Internet Advertising Bureau UK, conducted by PricewaterhouseCoopers, revealed that this was the largest rise in five years.

Video ads saw a huge growth and they now account for 10% of all online display advertising. Also, expenditure on online videos doubled from £54million to £109million in 2012 when two years earlier, the video spend in 2008 was a mere £12million.

Also, in 2011 advertising on mobile phones and other mobile devices raised by a staggering 157% to yet another new high of £203million. This rise was due to to the increased popularity of smartphones and tablet devices in which there are a number of 'free apps' which come with a great deal of adverts on them.

Following these increases, it was revealed that the finance sector spent the most on online ads and they were closely followed by conventional consumer goods like drinks and toiletries as the next biggest spenders. Other sectors which spent a lot on online ads included retail, entertainment, media and finally technology.

The findings correlate with news published a couple of months that the UK online video advertising market will rise at a triple digit percentage rate in 2012.
