It isn't just expensive for the bride and groom to get married nowadays because according to a recent survey, it is the guests who also have to spend a fortune. A survey carried out by Debenhams revealed that the average Brit forks out hundreds of pounds attending a relative or friend's nuptials.

Findings show that it costs the typical guest £510 each time they watch someone tie the knot and these costs can amount to more than £7,500 because it is estimated that Britons attend around 15 weddings in their entire lifetime.

The study of 1,000 adults found that around £150 is spent on the stag or hen do; £80 is forked out for a brand new outfit; and £80 is expended on alcoholic drinks. Furthermore, the cost of being a guest in 2012 includes the wedding present (£75); the accommodation to stay over for the night (£65); and travelling to and from the reception (£60).

It is Londoners and Glaswegians that came out on top as the guests that spent the most on drinks, with nearly £150 being consumed in the cities compared to the average which is just over half the amount. And guests in Dublin topped the style stakes as the people who disburse more than three times the average on a new ensemble.
