MARKHAM AND RICHMOND HILL, ONTARIO - As the school year winds down and summer is on its way, many parents begin considering braces for their children.

Before any treatment can begin, orthodontists must first evaluate what level of treatment a patient needs.

Many orthodontic practices offer a free orthodontic consultation to new patients, says Dr. Arun Rajasekaran, a Markham ceramic braces provider. This is a great way to have their questions answered.

When patients walk in, they should expect to be welcomed into the office and asked to fill out standard patient information forms. If patients find it more convenient, many practices offer new patient paperwork online that can be printed and completed at home before arriving. Practices including Rajasekaran's office- Liberty Orthodontic Centre- use these forms to keep records of patient contact information and their medical histories.

After the forms have been completed, patients are taken into a room where panoramic X-rays are taken, and photos of their mouth are taken.

Patients will then be examined by the orthodontist, says Rajasekaran, a Markham and Richmond Hill Invisalign Teen provider. After a through exam and an analysis of the X-rays, the orthodontist will work with the patient to construct a treatment plan that is ideal for them and discuss options such as Invisalign vs. metal braces. During this time, the braces provider will inform the patient if he or she must have any pre-treatment work performed, such as tooth extraction or tooth spacers.

After a consultation with the orthodontist, a treatment coordinator will speak with the patient and answer any questions they might have, such as how long the treatment will last and what fees accompany the treatment. Reputable orthodontic practices pride themselves on creating orthodontic treatments that accommodate each patient's medical and financial situations, Rajasekaran says. Patients can begin treatment right after they complete their orthodontic consultation.

"At our office, we work to make sure each patients needs are met and we wish them well on their journey to an attractive and healthy smile," says Rajasekaran.
