The London Festival of Architecture (LFA) returns to the capital on Saturday June 23rd, ushering in a series of events based on a theme entitled 'The Playful City'.

Held over three consecutive weekends, the biennial festival will aim to explore ways in which both Londoners and visitors can be active participants in the urban environment.

A host of exhibitions, lectures, guided walks, bicycle rides and other activities are scheduled to take place as part of the LFA, which is billed as the largest event of its kind in the world.

This year's theme is derived from London's status as the host city of the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

"All eyes will be on London in 2012 and there is no better time to celebrate the city's rich historical and contemporary architectural culture," said Peter Murray, the festival's founding director and chairman of New London Architecture (NLA).

He added that the programme will deliver "an abundance of fun" for both natives to the capital and people who have never visited the city before.

Anticipated highlights include an open-air screening of The Ladykillers in King's Cross, as well as the first European installation from architect and comic book artist Jimenez Lai.

The NLA is one of the organisers of the LFA, along with RIBA London, the Architecture Foundation and the British Council.

Festival-goers planning to book London hotels for the event can browse a wide range of options at LateRooms.com, which recommends the Lord Milner London.
