On the 40th anniversary of its creation as a lab school on the Marylhurst University campus, Marylhurst Early Childhood Center grows into The Marylhurst School with the addition of primary education offerings for children throughout the Portland Oregon area.

Serving students from Beaverton, Canby, Happy Valley, Lake Oswego, Milwaukie, Oregon City, SE Portland, Tualatin and West Linn, preschool classes for children ages 2 through 5 and primary programs from kindergarten through grade 6 are provided. Lead by Head of School Sheila Walker, the lower school expansion rolls out with a 1st/2nd grade blend in 2012, a 3rd/4th grade blend in 2013 and a 5th/6th grade blend in 2014.

Steeped in a progressive model of education, The Marylhurst School utilizes a narrative assessment approach in place of standardized tests and letter grades. Programs feature an emergent curriculum, 8:1 teacher-child ratios, Spanish exposure classes, enrichment programs in art and science, before and after-care, and parenting workshops.

The Marylhurst School is housed in the historical Barclay building at 817 12th Street in Oregon City on the site of the fiirst "public school" opened in Oregon by Sydney W. Moss in 1843. It relocated from its 1972 origins on the Marylhurst University campus to the current location in 1986.

"Originally the Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary established a school that put forth consideration for the individual; their intellectual wonderings, quality of character and creative expression. It is with much enthusiasm that we announce, the long awaited, next chapter in our schools history. The Marylhurst School will carry on the unique philosophy established 40 years ago, and be infused with our vision that 'All children travel a unique path; in our community of creators, explorers and citizens, we honor each journey." – Sheila Walker.
