Are you unhappy with the size, shape and look of your breasts? If so, a breast augmentation procedure could help in more ways than one, says a cosmetic surgery website.

According to Cosmetic Surgery Guru – which provides information and advice about all manner of surgical and non-surgical procedures – going under the knife can leave you with an aesthetically pleasing chest and is also a great way to improve your assets post-pregnancy.

Isabella Franklin, a spokeswoman for the site, said: "A breast augmentation is a major surgical procedure that should not be taken lightly, but it can have great physical and psychological benefits. Not only can it correct a saggy, dropping chest, but it can give the patient the cup size they desire – and this can lead to significant improvements in confidence levels."

She continued: "Boob jobs differ from patient-to-patient, but typically a small incision is made underneath each breast and the appropriate implants are inserted. The nipples are then readjusted if necessary and the wounds are closed, leaving the patient to come round and recover. Individuals might feel slightly sore for a few weeks, but a strict aftercare regime should be given, to make sure the patient remains fit and well."

The benefits of breast enlargements might explain why this procedure is the most-popular in the UK. Figures from The British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS) have revealed that 10,015 people went under the knife in 2011 and numbers rose by 6.2 per cent from 2010 – showing a serious increase in demand. More and more women, it seems, now see the surgeon's table as the answer to breast improvement and are relying on surgery to transform their figure.

Commenting on the report from BAAPS, Miss Franklin said: "Breast enlargements are popular for a reason. They allow women to feel youthful and beautiful and can change their outlook on life considerably. Women tend to act more positively with an enhanced cleavage, so I wouldn't be surprised to see further increases in the number of operations."

As well as acknowledging the benefits of boob jobs, Cosmetic Surgery Guru has also praised boob-boosting lingerie. According to the site, every woman should have some decent underwear, as it can help them to feel glamorous. This is backed up by a recent Manchester-based study, which suggests uplifting underwear can improve confidence levels by 75 per cent.
