Poor economic conditions have mixed affects on IT recruitment

November 16, 2012 (PRLEAP.COM) Technology News
Hiring levels in the IT sector decreased in Brisbane, Melbourne and Perth, while increasing in Sydney and remaining stable in Adelaide, according to the latest IT Job Market Update from specialist recruitment consultancy Robert Walters.

The Update found the economic fluctuations had mixed effects on IT hiring. Cost pressures, halted projects and general caution muted some growth. However, continued investment in ICT, health, and recovery in some parts of the finance market meant many organisations were carefully growing their IT teams.

Peter Bateson, Sydney manager of IT recruitment adds, "The demand for IT professionals varied, but on the whole remained steady, which was impressive considering how the fluctuating economy influenced other sectors. The quarter four outlook is fairly strong, and as confidence returns in early 2013 we expect further increases as organisations rebuild their teams. Organisations with strong IT teams will always function more efficiently than those who have drastically cut budget and headcount."

The update also found infrastructure candidates with cloud, virtualisation and security experience across multiple platforms (Windows, Unix and Linux) were highly sought after as companies continued to explore cost saving avenues. Project managers and business analysts with specific domain knowledge were in demand due to the increase in projects released from July onwards.
