Today the president is the leader of the free world. Seven times the vice president has been a successor to the presidency. Six have been on the death of a president and one on the resignation of a president. There have been six attempts on the life of a president, one on President Andrew Jackson, one on President Franklin Roosevelt, one on President Truman, two on President Ford, one on President Regan, one attempt was made on President Theodore Roosevelt when he was campaigning for the progressive party.

Some presidents have died in poverty. Ulysses S. Grant was dying of cancer when Samuel Clemons gave him money to write his memoirs. Today's presidents receive a good salary and decent money when they retire. The president and his family are guarded by the secret service. This also continues when they retire.
