WASHINGTON, N.J., Jan. 10, 2013 — Truck fans know what they like in a vehicle, and when an automaker decides to redesign a pickup, it must walk a fine line between improving on the current generation and not departing too radically from what made the model popular in the first place. GMC has carefully redesigned its GMC Sierra pickup truck for the 2014 model year, evolving its style and adding features designed specifically for the needs of truck owners. The new generation will bow at the Detroit Auto Show next week, giving motorists their first in-person look at the updated Sierra before it arrives at dealerships later this year.

Three new EcoTec3 engine options, a V6 and two V8 units, will offer improved power, torque and fuel efficiency across the lineup in the 2014 GMC Sierra. Inside, soft-touch materials have been designed for the rugged errands of truck owners, including high-wear cloth seats that resist stains and last longer. That upgraded upholstery is complemented by reduced wind noise in the cabin, which is achieved with new aerodynamic measures outside, including more sealing around the grille and headlights, new spats in front of the rear wheels and updated mirrors that minimize wind turbulence. Meanwhile, an available IntelliLink infotainment system features a high-definition, eight-inch color touchscreen that can control audio, Pandora Internet radio, Bluetooth connectivity and optional navigation functionality.

"The Sierra's updates for the 2014 model year will help it stay competitive in a changing marketplace, where even truck buyers now expect impressive fuel efficiency and the latest technology," said Ed Rossi, owner of Rossi Chevrolet Buick GMC, a New Jersey GMC dealership. "This is a pickup that was designed from the ground up with its buyers in mind, whether it is the large dash buttons that are easy to grip with gloves on, the infotainment system that keeps workers connected on the job, or the seats that are built for comfort during long-haul trips."

GMC hopes that the Sierra's redesign will continue the vehicle's lively sales growth, as the pickup sold 13 percent more units in December than in the same month last year. That boost from the brand's volume leader helped the overall GMC lineup close out 2012 on a positive note as well, with sales rising 5 percent compared to December 2011.

Another big factor in GMC's showroom success last month was the popularity of its second-highest-selling model, the Terrain, which saw a 49-percent sales increase year-over-year. As a small SUV with seating for five, the GMC Terrain is packed with versatile features that make it ideal for drivers with a range of needs. A 60/40 split-folding rear seat can slide nearly eight inches up and back for flexible cargo room, while a standard 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine produces 182 horsepower and returns up to 32 mpg on the highway. Buyers that would like to step it up in the performance department can also opt for a 310-horsepower 3.0-liter V6 unit.

"The Terrain's capability belies its size, and as customers continue to gravitate toward vehicles with high fuel economy, we expect the crossover to continue to sell well," added Rossi. "Buyers don't have to sacrifice versatility for that gas mileage either, as the Terrain offers plenty of room for the family, groceries and work gear, and it remains stylish while doing it."
