Heyday of Glam Nails Ending as Polish Sector Fades

November 28, 2005 (PRLEAP.COM) Lifestyle News
New York, November 28, 2005 — As women’s preferences turn away from the extra-long, ultra-glam polished nails made famous by Hollywood starlets toward a more manageable casual look, sales in the nail care products market are rapidly declining primarily due to lack of innovation in a mature nail polish category, according to Market Trends: Nail Care Products, a new report from market research publisher Packaged Facts, a division of MarketResearch.com.

Packaged Facts projects that polish, which accounts for 43% of the market, will fall from its peak of $279 million in 2000 to $238 million in 2005. Following suit, the artificial nails and accessories and nail treatment sectors will also continue to drop in sales, leaving the overall industry in a lurch. Rising to a more than $1 billion industry by 2002, the market has seen steady declines since, and is expected to only reach $929 million by year’s end — and plummet further to a 10-year low of $835 million by 2010.

There are, however, many factors that show promise to stimulating growth in the industry.

“The nail care industry is highly cyclical, so it’s no surprise that the era of the long-nailed diva is ending,” said Cara Morrison, Associate Editor of Packaged Facts. “This current downward trend certainly doesn’t symbolize the demise of the industry. On the contrary, the growing awareness of the potential dangers of nail infections will continue to drive growth of nail implements and treatments, the male nail grooming market is a wide-open opportunity, customizable colors and salon-quality at-home artificial nails are coming of age, and manufacturers are responding by pushing a sizeable number of new polish products which will be key to future growth.”

Market Trends: Nail Care Products provides a comprehensive look at the nail care market, examines new product trends, offers competitive profiles of industry leaders (and up and comers), and looks at consumer trends and behaviors surrounding nail care products.
