Trend Micro Launches New Layer of Protection for ATMs in the Middle East

November 18, 2004 (PRLEAP.COM) Technology News
In response to demand from financial and public service organizations in the region, Trend Micro (TSE: 4704, NASDAQ: TMIC), a leader in network antivirus and Internet content security software and services, today announced the launch of its Network VirusWall 300 outbreak prevention appliance for the Middle East, designed to protect mission critical devices such as ATMs (Automatic Teller Machines) against the increasing threat of Internet worms.

Trend Micro Network VirusWall 300 deploys threat-specific knowledge from TrendLabs, Trend Micro's global network of antivirus research centres, at network end points to help organisations proactively detect, prevent or contain, and eliminate outbreaks.

"Progressive organizations are beginning to realize that internet worms can damage more than company computers, they can hit the machines that we take for granted in our daily lives – ATMs, airport technology, and even cash registers in the supermarket,' said Justin Doo, managing director of Trend Micro in the Middle East and Africa region. "Trend Micro is working around the clock to contain these viruses and remove the threat they represent, and Network VirusWall 300 is a critically-important addition to the arsenal of tools available.'

Network VirusWall appliances help organisations improve their operational resilience by mitigating security risks, easing the virus outbreak management burden, and reducing system downtime.

"Network worms continue to be problematic as financial institutions and enterprises deploy mission-critical devices such as ATM machines and self-service kiosks on TCP/IP networks. Experience has shown that network worm attacks are particularly difficult to contain with traditional, signature-based client and parameter virus filtering,' says Maria Kun, research analyst at Gartner.

"The speed at which worms proliferate can cause crippling network traffic with only a few infected networked devices, making remote identification, isolation, and repair of infected devices difficult. Enterprises are looking for proactive protection policies, rapid identification of rogue/infected devices, and the ability to isolate and remotely repair infected devices during an outbreak,' she added.

Trend Micro Network VirusWall 300 is deployed in front of network endpoints such as ATM machines to protect them from network threats. The appliance incorporates a web-based management console, Trend Micro Control Manager for Network VirusWall 300 which allows network managers to centrally manage Network VirusWall 300s. Network VirusWall 300 supports Trend Micro's Enterprise Protection Strategy, enabling it to:

· Improve business continuity by preventing network worms and intruders (unauthorised access) from reaching mission-critical devices
· Ensure consistent deployment of the latest security updates and flexible configuration to manage threats through centralised management
· Mitigate outbreaks and the high cost of recovery through automated outbreak prevention and damage clean-up services
· Avoid hardware and operating system compatibility, stability, and performance concerns through an appliance form factor

Raimund Genes, President of European Operations, Trend Micro said, "Trend Micro has studied the issue closely, and created Network VirusWall 300 to offer protection against network worms for IP-enabled ATMs from any ATM vendor. The launch of Trend Micro's Network VirusWall 300 enables financial institutions and other organisations to maximize operation resiliency and ATM uptime while minimising potential recovery time and costs associated with a network virus outbreak – enabling them to provide their customers with the type of service they have come to expect.'
