Clarence H. Braddock III, MD, Named Chair-Elect of the ABIM's Board of Directors

Philadelphia, PA, July 1, 2013 – Clarence H. Braddock III, MD, MPH has been named Chair-Elect of the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) Board of Directors. Dr. Braddock is Professor of Medicine and Associate Dean for Undergraduate and Graduate Medical Education at Stanford University School of Medicine in Stanford, California. ABIM sets the standards and certifies physicians practicing in internal medicine and its subspecialties who possess the knowledge, skills and attitudes required to provide high quality care.

Dr. Braddock becomes Chair-Elect of the Board as it is redefining the structure of its governance. To keep pace with the rate of change in health care, the ABIM Board of Directors, chaired by David H. Johnson, MD, will oversee the overall strategic direction of the organization and support efforts to make the certification credential relevant and valuable to the broader health care community and to all the internists who participate in it. The Board will work closely with the newly formed ABIM Council whose primary purpose is to ensure the quality, relevance and effectiveness of ABIM's programs in initial Certification and Maintenance of Certification (MOC).

The Board of Directors and Council are comprised of physicians who are board certified in internal medicine or one of its subspecialties and who actively participate in Maintenance of Certification. Dr. Braddock is certified in internal medicine and completed MOC in 2011.

His insight and ability to ask the tough questions will be of great help as we look to the future to determine what it will mean to be a good doctor and to establish a credential that continues to be meaningful to physicians," said Richard J. Since 2009, Dr. Braddock has served as Chair of the ABIM Product Oversight Committee, which develops policies and procedures regarding ABIM's Self-Evaluation of Medical Knowledge and Self-Evaluation of Practice Performance components of Maintenance of Certification (MOC) products.

A national leader in medical education, particularly in bioethics, Dr. Braddock launched the Bioethics Education Project, an initiative to expand ethics and professionalism education in medicine at University of Washington. He also led the development of a model curriculum in bioethics and medical humanities with the American Society for Bioethics and Humanities, and is a founding member of the Academy for Professionalism in Health Care. Dr. Braddock has received numerous teaching awards, and recently founded the Stanford Center for Medical Education Research and Innovation.

Dr. Braddock served as Chair of the Ethics Committee for the Society of General Internal Medicine and serves on the Ethics, Professionalism and Human Rights Committee for the American College of Physicians.
