Continued Growth of Homeschooling Creates Questions for Many Parents

(PRLEAP.COM) Dandridge, TN - As homeschooling becomes increasingly popular, more people are considering home education than ever before. Taking responsibility for their children’s education, however, intimidates some parents. Teaching has for years been considered something best left “to the professionals”. Nonetheless, in 2002-2003, between 1,700,000 – 2,100,000 students were homeschooled in the United States alone, with a continued growth of 7% annually. Studies show that parents are successfully home educating their children and that homeschooled students are outperforming their public schooled peers on national standardized tests by 30 - 37 percentile points across all subject areas.

But who is teaching these parents how to teach their children? Are they required to have an education degree in order to teach their children? Who monitors them to ensure that they are doing an adequate job? The answers vary from state to state. Some states have much more governmental regulation than others. In his 1997 study (Strengths of Their Own), Dr. Brian Ray, President of National Home Education Research Institute (www.NHERI.com) showed that the degree of governmental regulation had no significant effect on the academic performance of homeschoolers. Apparently parents don’t have to be regulated into finding the best ways to educate their children. Loving and dedicated parents merely have to select from the many options available to homeschoolers now.
