Benefit Packages Announces New Certification Process For California Insurance Agents Approved

December 13, 2013 (PRLEAP.COM) Business News
California Insurance Commissioner Dave Jones recently approved new framework for licensing health insurance agents to become certified to help consumers find health plans under the new insurance exchanges set up by the Affordable Care Act. Benefit Packages asserts that this process will give agents the training they need to help consumers find the plans that are right for them and their families.

Here in California, health insurance agents are already required to take insurance and ethics training as well as undergo criminal background checks and fingerprinting to get an agent's license. The new training will provide agents with the information they need to help consumers navigate the exchanges, helping customers understand the subsidies available to them, what various plans offer and how much insurance they can afford.

Jones' move will assist more than 12,000 insurance agents around the state get licensed and prepare to work with Covered California to sell health insurance offered by Covered California, which was set up by the state to ensure the new marketplaces set up by the Affordable Care Act achieve their goal of offering coverage to all Americans.

Insurance agents have historically helped consumers navigate the complex insurance marketplace, and the new training and licensing framework will ensure that they're able to continue that role in the new market set up by the ACA.

Covered California Certified Insurance Agents selling in the exchange's individual market are required to be appointed by health insurance companies. All Certified Insurance Agents will be eligible to sell in Covered California's Small Business Health Options Program (SHOP).
