DoubleTree by Hilton Ocean Point Publishes a Video on Miami

North Miami Beach, Florida   December 13, 2013   Travel News
(PRLEAP.COM) The DoubleTree by Hilton Ocean Point Resort & Spa has released a video on Miami, detailing some interesting facts from its history, its famous residents, and its gorgeous natural surroundings. The video aims to educate Miami Beach hotel guests and others with a few fun facts to help visitors appreciate America's Riviera in a new way.

The city was once used as plantations for growing oranges and other citrus fruits. One landowner, Julia Tuttle of Cleveland, persuaded railroad magnate and co-founder of Standard Oil, Henry Flagler, to expand the Florida East Coast Railway southward to the Biscayne Bay area and build a hotel. After seeing how Miami was spared the effects of a frost that wiped out virtually the entire citrus crop north of Miami, he visited the area for himself and declared it ripe for expansion. The first train to Miami arrived April 13, 1896, and the Royal Palm Hotel opened the next year.

Miami is known for ideal temperatures. For example, it has only ever snowed once in recorded history, in 1977. Also, the city's temperatures have never dropped below 27 degrees F or risen above 98 degrees F. On average, Miami's lowest temperature during its coldest month (January) is still a balmy 61 degrees. The hottest temperatures of summer (August) average 89 degrees. June sees the highest levels of precipitation, but the short bursts of rain throughout the summer keep temperatures comfortable.

Miami's welcoming climate has encouraged plenty of outdoor activities among residents and visitors. Everglades National Park, the only everglades ecosystem in the world, has attracted about 1 million people per year since the mid-60s. While there is no snow in Miami, Miami Beach is home to one of the largest snow skiing clubs in the US. Miami has also been deemed the Wreck Diving Capital of the World, providing divers and snorkelers with over 50 wreck sites to see within its boundaries.
