Drivers License Guide Company Announces Inclusion of Trusted Traveler Cards in 2014 I.D. Checking Guide

December 23, 2013   Business News
(PRLEAP.COM) December 23, 2013 REDWOOD CITY, CA — In order to enhance protection from fraudulent documents involved in U.S. border crossing, the Drivers License Guide Company has announced that the 2014 I.D. Checking Guide, United States and Canada Edition will include all four Trusted Traveler Cards issued by United States Customs and Border Protection (CBP).

As a result of the security issues identified by the events of 9/11/2001, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has been actively working to elevate the level of security we can expect for individuals entering the United States, whether they are U.S. citizens, lawful permanent residents, or citizens of other countries. Since 2009, cross-border travel identification requirements between the United States and Canada have been expanded. The DHS, a federal agency, has implemented the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI) to support and facilitate a more streamlined yet rigorous method for verifying legitimate entry into United States at its borders.

The Trusted Traveler Cards issued by CBP, which provide expedited travel/trade for certain individuals through dedicated lanes and access control points, include the following four card types:

Global Entry: Allows expedited clearance for pre-approved, low-risk travelers upon arrival in the United States.

NEXUS: Facilitates land and sea travel, as well as air travel when traveling to and from airports using the NEXUS program, and provides expedited travel via land, air, or sea to approved members between the United States and Canada border.

SENTRI: Facilitates entry into the United States by land or sea, and also provide expedited travel to approved members between the United States and Mexico border.

FAST (Free and Secure Trade Program): Allows United States /Canada and United States /Mexico partnering importers expedited release for qualifying commercial shipments.

When presented for identification purposes, these Trusted Traveler Cards require the same scrutiny as other ID documents. Knowledge of the valid format and security features, which the I.D. Checking Guide, United States and Canada Edition supports, is the first step in preventing ID fraud by counterfeit documents. In addition, any secondary ID document presented can be confirmed by reference to the Guide for details of the proper security codes, security features, and valid format.

Previously, U.S. and Canadian citizens were not required to produce a passport to enter the United States, but that changed as of June 1, 2009. Since then, U.S. and Canadian citizens have been required to produce a WHTI-compliant document for entry into the United States, which includes Enhanced Driver's Licenses, Enhanced Non-Driver Identification Cards, FAST Cards, NEXUS Cards, Permanent Resident Cards (Form I-551), Passports, or United States Passport Cards.
