The Laundromata family rejoiced after their successful exhibition and execution of their new business ideas. Spinning upward, Laundromata is gaining credibility and momentum as a new force in the fine art world. Spin Cycle #1 took place in the Oceanfront home of Geoff Shively in Balboa on Dec 2-3.

With live music, fresh jewelry, fashion, and fine art Spin Cycle #1 attracted the likes of hall of fame sports celebrities and Hollywood big wigs. “The general idea is that art is intimidating to most people and many shy away from galleries and showings for that reason. I aim to put on a series of art shows showcasing hung art, music, and fashion in more intimate environments such as homes, club houses, and upscale restaurants. Going one step further, I will show people an eclectic mélange of fine art in these venues.” Says Geoff Shively, Fresh Thinker, Laundromata Inc. “No longer will people be told what to purchase by stodgy local galleries and stagnant art catalogs.”

Breaks and Jazz beats filled the air as DJ F Street spun his trademark tunes as the perfect segue into a intimate live performance by hot local duo Brewer and Chase. “The night had a really cool vibe going, it felt just like the Moonshine Festival.” remarked Chase Caillouette, “It was a pleasure performing for such a diverse crowd” Look for their new CD coming out on the Laundromata Label after the new year, featuring a soulful and rich surf rock sound with upbeat jazz and Latin influences. Brewer and Chase has been gaining acclaim from peers and music industry executives alike in the past year after the independent release of their debut album Jokes for Birds.

Geoff Shively has been a successful Orange County entrepreneur working with Fortune 500 companies since he graduated early from high school at age 17. Geoff parlayed a love of computers and programming into a successful publicly traded software security firm and was awarded the #1 spot in OCMetro’s Hottest 25 People of Orange County. Taking a break from the tech industry, Geoff stepped down as Chief Scientist and Founder to pump quarters in a new machine, the machine that is Laundromata Inc. His drive and passion has been renewed in his first loves… art and music, and the need to share those passions with others.

Laundromata artists Carson Grier, MadSTEEZ, David Meister, Maya Speilman, and Matt DeMartino were hung along side 3 original pieces of art by the one and only Paul Frank. The enterpiece of Spin Cycle #1 was Paul Frank’s Julius character on canvas which launched his 100 million dollar design business. The priceless blue on brown Julius, along with 2 other rare pieces from Mr. Frank’s body of work, were on display, not for sale.

“Geoff is breathing new life into the arts community by blending a variety of visual and performing arts with fashion to create something exciting and distinct,” says Mary Lonich, executive director of the Balboa Performing Arts Theater Foundation. “This is indicative of the type of unusual collaboration we intend to present at the Balboa Performing Arts Theater, and it’s a great example of how local artists are infusing Balboa with a renewed sense of energy and passion. Exciting things are indeed happening down here, as more and more people are discovering. I can’t wait for our theater to open so people like Geoff will have a unique venue in which to showcase their work.”

Keep an eye out for the next Laundromata Spin Cycle coming soon to a snazzy and jazzy venue near you.
