New Use for Internet Discovered: Creating Art

(PRLEAP.COM) December 22, 2005 / New York, NY — A new website (www.ArtToEndPoverty.com) was recently launched to explore yet another application of the Internet: creating art. The initiative is using its novel approach to not only create something unique, but also support a not-for-profit organization that seeks to end global poverty.

According to the website, Art To End Poverty seeks to create a ‘snapshot’ of the Internet community through what the initiative claims is a new genre of art called ‘Collaborative New Media’. In this genre, art is created over the Internet by numerous contributors; the initiative intends to create a collage from the pictures contributed by companies, organizations and individuals from around the world. One goal is to eventually have the collage displayed in various museums and art galleries. Contributors will not only have the opportunity to participate in the creation of a new form of art, but also gain exposure to everyone who sees the website. The site allows its contributors to link the pictures that they contribute to websites, providing them with additional advertising value and making the art a nexus for Internet surfing.

This initiative extends beyond the artistic elements, however, as the art is being used to support The Millennium Initiative (TMI), a not-for-profit organization that seeks to end global poverty. TMI aims to raise awareness about the Millennium Development Goals, which are specific objectives defined by the United Nations to assist lesser developed countries in eradicating poverty. The ArtToEndPoverty initiative is supporting TMI both by helping the organization increase awareness about the Millennium Development Goals and by raising funds for TMI’s operations.

According to the ArtToEndPoverty website:
"The Millennium Development Goals were created by global thought leaders at the United Nations. The eight Millennium Development Goals seek to eradicate poverty by helping lesser developed countries become self-sufficient societies. These goals include: 1) eradicating hunger, disease, gender inequality and 2) providing the means for developing the infrastructure to build self-supporting societies.

The UN economists who created these goals determined that these lesser developed countries could be brought into the 21st century in approximately 15 years if the world’s wealthiest nations donate less than 1% of gross national income to specific programs. Since the development of these goals, the world’s wealthiest nations have committed to funding these programs numerous times. However, only a few of these countries have followed through and contributed their committed level of funding. According to the UN, there is a way to stop the starvation and end the poverty; our governments simply need to act."
