August 26, 2014 - COLUMBIA, Tenn. — As part of her commitment to community health, Sarah Clayton, DDS, participated in the Remote Area Medical Clinic held at Columbia Central High School in Columbia on Saturday, July 26.

Dr. Clayton volunteers with the Remote Area Medical Volunteer Corp, whose mission is to provide free clinic events to traditionally under-served areas. The event featured dental, vision and medical professionals offering services and expertise. Since the organization's inception in 1992, RAM has offered more than 346 medical clinics in 12 states. More than 380,000 patients have received millions of dollars in free medical care, and now Columbia residents can benefit from volunteer's expertise and assistance.

"Dental health is so important to a person's overall health, yet many are unable to afford dental care," Dr. Clayton explains. "I believe in giving back to the community whenever possible, and the volunteer corps is a way for me to offer others this vital care."

The clinic was a coordinated effort for many medical and non-medical volunteers, which culminated in the July 26 event at Columbia Central High School, where hundreds of attendees received needed medical evaluations. When necessary, follow-up care or assistance in obtaining needed medical equipment was also offered.

Dr. Clayton is a graduate of the University of Tennessee, where she finished in the top 15 in her class. Her Columbia, TN dental practice offers general and cosmetic dentistry services, including dental restorations such as tooth-colored fillings and crowns. Dr. Clayton treats patients ages 3 and up at her practice, which has been a fixture of the Columbia, TN community since 1983. Although Dr. Clayton joined the practice years later, she is proud to carry on the traditions of caring for community members of all ages.

"I hope the Remote Area Medical clinic helped Columbia residents know medicine is about more than insurance and high costs — it is about caring for others," Dr. Clayton said. "I'm proud to join fellow area volunteers in providing dental care for those who need it most. I encourage those who need assistance to continue to attend these potentially life-saving events."
