Packet Brings Docker Automation to Bare Metal with Support for All Leading Container Platforms

September 01, 2015 (PRLEAP.COM) Technology News
September 1, 2015 - Packet announced today that its bare metal cloud is the first to support the top four Docker container platforms, enabling microservices-based applications to scale and deploy rapidly on single tenant servers.

"We started Packet to reinvent bare metal servers, making them as developer-friendly as virtual machines," said Zachary Smith, co-founder and CEO of Packet. "With these integrations, we're empowering developers to easily deploy Docker workloads in entirely new and powerful ways."

Packet's native provider status with Tutum, ContainerShip, Rancher and StackEngine is a first for a bare metal cloud, and something that the Docker and container orchestration communities have been pushing for.

"At Tutum, we have very specific platform requirements for deployment consistency and provisioning times that other bare metal providers haven't been able to meet," said Borja Burgos-Galindo, co-founder and CEO at Tutum. "Packet's ability to consistently deploy bare metal in 5-10 minutes is a huge win for our customers, and their modern API with cloud-init support made for a smooth integration."

Since exiting private beta in June, 99.98% of Packet's bare metal servers - which come in two premium configurations - provisioned in under 8 minutes. With hourly pricing and a full-featured API, developers are able to program against bare metal infrastructure using the exact same tools and techniques they leverage at virtual cloud providers such as AWS and Digital Ocean.

"As developers embrace a Docker-based microservices architecture for scaling their production workloads, the benefits of bare metal become even more apparent," explains Shannon Williams, co-founder at Rancher Labs. "Packet's platform is a natural fit for Rancher, and we're excited to bring this new infrastructure option to our users."

Packet currently operates in the NY-metro market and will launch in San Jose, CA shortly, along with additional server configuration types.

"Packet is modernizing bare metal hosting and giving users who are already familiar and comfortable with cloud platforms the best of both worlds," said Phil Dougherty, co-founder and CEO of ContainerShip. "Fast provisioning times and a modern API have made Packet an exciting option for ContainerShip users who are looking to deploy containerized workloads that demand high performance and throughput."
