According to Sheldon Filger, author of the controversial novel about nuclear terrorism, "King of Bombs," the latest message from Osama bin Laden broadcast by the Arab satellite television network Al-Jazeera may contain an ominous warning. In the audio tape broadcast by Al-Jazeera on January 19, 2006, the leader of Al-Qaeda said, "The new operations of Al-Qaida has not happened not because we could not penetrate the security measures. It is being prepared and you'll see it in your homeland very soon," in an apparent warning to the American people. Osama bin Laden also offered the American public a truce with Al-Qaeda, suggesting Al-Qaeda was well aware of President George Bush's declining popularity at home, especially in regard to the war in Iraq.

Interpreting the meaning of Osama bin Laden's latest threat will undoubtedly occupy the time of intelligence analysts throughout the world. The author of "King of Bombs" is very clear of what he believes is the ultimate significance of bin Laden's message. "We know that Al-Qaeda is very meticulous and patient in planning and executing major terrorist operations," Sheldon Filger said. "The attacks that occured on 9/11 took years of planning and preparation. In the taped message from Mr. bin Laden, he very clearly and unambigously warns the American people that they have not had four years respite from attacks since 9/11 due to the effectiveness of their nation's security meassures. Rather, he is telling the people of the United States, the operations being planned are of such a scale, they require a lengthly period of preparations, which are now nearly complete."

In Sheldon Filger's novel, "King of Bombs," a post-9/11 attack on the United States is planned by Al-Qaeda using high-yield nuclear bombs. Is this what Mr. Filger believes Al-Qaeda is planning? "I would not rule that out as a possibility," Filger warned. "The attacks that have occured on the transport systems in London and Madrid don't require 4 years of complicated planning, and could have been conducted at anytime in the United States. However, any attack that did not exceed the scale of the September 11 atrocities would not accomplish Al-Qaeda's operational and strategic objectives. In my judgement, Al-Qaeda is investing years of planning for an operation that would produce a scale of loss of life and destruction commensurate with a weapon of mass destruction. This could mean an attack with nuclear, biological or chemical weapons," Filger said. "We must remember what Osama bin Laden's ultimate goal is. He has said publically that his greatest desire is to see America become a shadow of itself."
