Xarelto Lawsuit News: Federal Multidistrict Litigation Convenes January Status Conference, Bernstein Liebhard LLP Reports

February 08, 2016 (PRLEAP.COM) Business News
February 8, 2016 - Thousands of Xarelto lawsuits (www.rxinjuryhelp.com/xarelto/lawsuit) continue to move forward in the federal multidistrict litigation now underway in the U.S. District Court, Eastern District of Louisiana, where the most recent monthly Status Conference was convened on January 22, 2016. A Minute Entry notes that, among other things, the parties exchanged bellwether trial selections on January 11th, while random selections were made on January 15th. The Entry also indicates that the Court will hear oral arguments on a proposed order governing the parties' interactions with plaintiffs' prescribing and treating physicians on February 23rd, immediately following the Status Conference scheduled for that date. "Our Firm is representing a number of Xarelto plaintiffs in this proceeding. We are pleased that these cases are progressing, especially in regards to bellwether trials. Such trials are intended to test the strength of plaintiffs' allegations, and can provide insight into potential jury decisions in similar cases," says Sandy A. Liebhard, a partner at Bernstein Liebhard LLP, a nationwide law firm representing victims of defective medical devices and drugs. The Firm continues to evaluate potential Xarelto lawsuits on behalf of individuals who may have been harmed by this blood-thinning medication.

Xarelto Lawsuits Mount
According to court documents, more than 2,800 Xarelto lawsuits are now pending in the Eastern District of Louisiana. All of the cases put forth similar allegations regarding the anticoagulant's potential to cause uncontrollable internal bleeding and other problems. Among other things, plaintiffs claim that Xarelto's manufacturers failed to provide adequate warnings regarding its serious risks, and wrongly promoted the medication as a superior alternative to warfarin. They note that bleeding associated with the much older blood thinner can be reversed via the administration of vitamin K. However, there is currently no approved antidote to stop Xarelto bleeding events.

Xarelto was approved by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) in 2011, and is currently indicated to prevent strokes in atrial fibrillation patients; to treat deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism; and to prevent deep vein thrombosis in patients undergoing hip or knee implant surgery. Xarelto's label includes a black box warning that contains information about the increased risk of blood clot formation after premature discontinuation of the medication in the absence of adequate alternative anticoagulation.

Xarelto patients who allegedly experienced uncontrollable gastrointestinal bleeding, cerebral bleeding or other episodes of internal hemorrhaging may be eligible to join the litigation involving the blood thinner.
