3M, Smith & Nephew and ConvaTec Lead Popular Moist Wound Dressings Market in China

March 10, 2016 – Vancouver, BC – According to a new series of reports on the Asia-Pacific wound and tissue management market by iData Research (www.idataresearch.com), moist dressings have been steadily growing in popularity since their introduction into the Chinese market. In 2015, unit sales of moist dressings grew at double-digit rates due to increased awareness among physicians, nurses and patients regarding the benefits of moist dressings over traditional dressings, despite their higher costs.

Moist foam dressings can be tailor-made to desired levels of exudate absorption, adherence, shapes and sizes, which make them flexible in their usage. The popularity of foam dressings is expected to increase despite their higher costs due to ease of application and their versatility in maintaining a moist environment for a variety of exudate levels and wound types.

"China has a rapidly aging and a diabetic population, who suffer from venous leg ulcers, pressure ulcers or other types of chronic wounds," explains Dr. Kamran Zamanian, CEO of iData. "They will have to resort to advanced wound dressings for faster healing times and to avoid infections to wounds."

Transparent film dressings are used to manage smaller wounds with minimal exudate levels. In hospitals they are predominantly used to protect and secure IV catheters. Despite being an older technology product, hydrocolloid dressings are still the largely preferred choice for primary dressings in the nascent Chinese advanced wound care (AWC) market, due to their lower prices compared to foam dressings. Hydrofiber dressings, though a newer technology in the moist dressings segment, have not been able to penetrate deeply into the Chinese market so far, due to concerns around the dressings sticking to the edges of the wounds.

Generally, dressings are sold in a box of ten. Manufacturers have their own size specifications to aid in product differentiation. However, 4x4 seems to be the most popular size as it corresponds to the most common wound size. The ASP of foam and hydrofiber dressings was the highest among the different moist dressing products. However, all the segments within the moist dressings market, without exception, experienced declining ASPs. This is due to strong price competition among participating companies because of large and frequent hospital tenders for procuring these dressings, resulting in large volume discounts. Price decrease was the highest for older technology dressings such as alginates and hydrogels.

In 2015, 3M was the leading competitor in the moist dressings market. The company held significant share in the foam dressings, transparent film and hydrocolloid segments. Its Tegaderm® product line has strong brand recognition and is available in all moist dressing product categories. The second leading competitor in the moist dressings market was Smith & Nephew. It participated in all market segments with the ALLEVYN™ product line and performed particularly well in the growing foam segment. It was also strong in the hydrogel and transparent film market. The third leading competitor in the moist dressings market was ConvaTec. Its hydrofiber product, Aquacel®, is one of the most recognized within the wound care field. ConvaTec was among the first to market hydrocolloids with its DuoDerm® dressing, which allowed it to maintain a strong position within that segment. Other competitors in the Chinese moist dressings market include Coloplast, Hartmann, Mölnlycke, and many local manufacturers.
