Cellino & Barnes Investigates Cancer-Causing Chemicals in Vermont Water

March 18, 2016 (PRLEAP.COM) Business News
March 18, 2016 - NORTH BENNINGTON, Vt. – Several private wells near a closed chemical plant have been found to be contaminated with potentially toxic levels of an industrial chemical linked to cancer, pregnancy complications and other diseases.

The chemical found in the community's water supply is perfluorooctanoic acid, or PFOA.
Cellino & Barnes attorney Kerby Wright was in North Bennington, Vermont on Thursday evaluating some of the chemical-contaminated communities in Northern New York and Vermont.

"It was heartbreaking to personally see how these communities are suffering," Wright said. "This is a serious health issue and no one was warned until it was too late."

Unfortunately, this is not the first time this dangerous and deadly chemical has been found in drinking water. PFOA has previously contaminated water supplies in both Vermont and New York. Each time, the contamination has occurred near sites or former sites of chemical or plastics factories.
Cellino & Barnes cofounder Steve Barnes said some tests have found PFOA at levels over 2,000 parts-per-trillion, more than 10 times the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's recommended limit.

"Each day, more homes and wells are discovering that they are contaminated with this toxic chemical," Barnes said. "Short-term exposure to this chemical can have serious health effects but many people in these communities have been drinking this water for years."

PFOA was once used to manufacture many commercial products like non-stick (Teflon) pans and stain-resistant rugs. Recently, industries have decreased the usage of PFOA due to health concerns.
