(July 11, 2016 ) - Friendship Health & Rehab has unveiled its plans to expand its 52-acre campus in Pewee Valley, KY which has housed a nursing home facility for more than 40 years. The owners, led by CEO Robert Young, will soon expand into other senior living facilities and begin the five-to-eight year anticipated buildout of the campus with a focus on intergenerational activities. The campus includes a natural wooded area, as well as a soccer field and open green spaces, and the owners will look to preserve these elements. A community walking trail, several sports fields, and a rehab pool are planned as part of the development. Upon its completion, the campus will accommodate up to 550 senior adults. This will bring employment up to 300 from a current staff of 120, and ultimately will be the showcase senior healthcare campus in Oldham County.

Phase I, a private pay model, will include an assisted living and memory care center, with up to 64 beds in the building. Construction is expected to begin sometime this fall, but no later than the winter of 2017, with an investment of $12M for the Phase I construction. Of those, 48 beds will be for the memory care unit for dementia patients. Set criteria exist for this type of care, at a certain stage of dementia, said CEO Young. "We aim to provide a home-like care environment that doesn't feel like an institution. The setting allows for setting a slightly larger dining area than home, with a sense of belonging and comfort," he said.

Phase II, a plan for independent living units, is anticipated to begin in the following year of 2018. The plan calls for a minimum of 150 senior living apartments, and 55 patio homes, in a main building with a clubhouse and a pool.

The current nursing home and rehab facility has 128 beds, and accepts private pay, Medicaid, and Medicare patients.

As part of the vision for this campus, Young and the staff of Friendship Health & Rehab have been working on an intergenerational activity, faith-based approach to keeping the seniors integrated in the larger community of Oldham County. The Generation Connect Foundation has been established this year, and now oversees the Pewee Valley Futbol Club for children between the ages of 9-12 years, on a soccer field onsite. Children interested may participate in the Pewee Valley Futbol Club, which is expected to have several soccer teams in the years ahead. Other sports venues may be accommodated, including softball, lacrosse, or field hockey. The foundation and its youth club members will participate in community projects with the seniors around the arts, prayer, and sharing special interests, including singing and performing. Scholarships will be offered to students for continuing participation in the Generation Connect seasonal programs. "We are looking for these students to learn self-esteem, and build relationships with older adults to enrich and enhance their learning and begin to foster a commitment to all phases of optimal aging for themselves and others in their extended families," Young said.
