August 11, 2016 - Vancouver, BC – According to a new series of reports on the U.S. market for wound and tissue management by iData Research (www.idataresearch.com), the largest segment of the U.S. wound and tissue management market is the wound closure segment, which represented roughly 25% of the total market and is expected to exceed $2.6 billion by 2022. This market includes wound closure devices, static compression therapy, dynamic compression therapy, advanced dressings, hemostats, tissue sealants, anti-adhesion products and negative wound pressure therapy (NPWT).

It is estimated that more than 1 million diabetic foot ulcers are treated, which costs around $10 to $15 billion in expenditures. An additional $7 to $10 billion is spent on treating venous leg ulcers, and patients that requiring amputations as a result of poor wound management. The cost of chronic wound care in the U.S. is estimated to be between $25 and $50 billion annually, mainly consisting of nursing time and hospital admittance costs.

"Increased prevalence of diabetes will continue to put a burden on wound treatment in the the U.S. healthcare system," explains Dr. Kamran Zamanian, CEO of iData. "There will be plenty of demand for wound management devices resulting in the market experiencing consistent strong growth over time."

The advanced wound dressing market segment exhibited the highest growth over the forecast period. Growth was driven by strong sales of foam dressings along with continued unit sales growth of antimicrobial and interactive dressings. Further growth will be facilitated by the introduction of new products that will be easier to use. However, changes to reimbursement specific to the skin substitute market will result in slowed growth.

Ethicon, Acelity and Covidien (Medtronic) together, have captured nearly 50% of market share in U.S. wound and tissue management market. Although Ethicon's products are relatively expensive compared to other competitors, it's vast and diverse product portfolio across wound closure and biosurgery markets allows it to bundle different products together in service agreements, in order to secure large GPO contracts. KCI (Kinetic Concepts Inc.) continues to lead the negative pressure wound therapy market but their revenue is significantly affected by the competitive bidding process, which allows smaller competitors to increase their market penetration through aggressive pricing strategies.
