Zimmer Biomet, DePuy Synthes Lead European Orthopedic Large Joint Device Market due to Extensive Product Portfolios

August 26, 2016 (PRLEAP.COM) Health News
According to a new series of reports on the European markets for orthopedic large joint devices by iData Research (www.idataresearch.com), there is a shift in the hip replacement market towards hybrid and cementless devices. A cementless component, also known as press-fit, carries a higher price tag than a cemented one. Similarly, ceramic is more expensive than metal and its increased usage will drive market prices. These shifts will maintain pricing on implants, which are otherwise under governmental pressure to decrease. The €1 billion hip replacement market represents over half of the total large joint orthopedic market.

"The largest segment in the large joint orthopedic market is the hip replacement device segment which is expected to grow over the forecast period," explains Dr. Kamran Zamanian, CEO of iData. "The market will be driven by growth in the revision segment, which has the most expensive products in the hip reconstruction market."

The second largest market in Europe is the knee replacement device market. Demand for primary knee replacement is expected to remain strong. Germany accounted for the greatest number of knee replacement unit sales due to the size of its population. France and the U.K. had the second and third highest unit sales respectively. Though the population of Italy is similar to that of France and the U.K., its smaller economy hampers overall unit sales. However, unit sales growth is the fastest in Italy due to Italy's economic recovery allowing for more knee replacements to be performed. Most countries experienced an average selling price decline in 2015 because they seek to reduce implant prices to help manage government spending, rather than only reducing procedure numbers.

Zimmer Biomet is the leading competitor in the European large joint replacement market. Zimmer Biomet sells hip and knee replacements as well as bone cement. Their knee offerings include the Vanguard® Complete Knee, Oxford Partial Knee and Vanguard® 360 Revision Knee and E1 Antioxidant Infused bearing. Similarly, DePuy Synthes possesses market share and an extensive portfolio in all the large joint market segments. DePuy Synthes has a very strong presence in the overall orthopedic market, particularly within trauma. This provides the company a strong brand and the ability to familiarize in-training surgeons with their products.

Heraeus leads the bone cement market in Europe. Hip and knee manufacturers that do not sell their own bone cement will often purchase from Heraeus, rather than through competitors such as Zimmer Biomet or DePuy Synthes. Other notable competitors in the market include Smith & Nephew, Aesculap, Tornier, Link, Lima, Amplitude, Exactech, Mathys, DJO Global, Corin and Gruppo Bioimpianti. There is a lot of regional variation in market share in Europe. Typically manufactures perform best in their home countries. Examples of this include Amplitude and Tornier in France, Lima in Italy, Aesculap in Germany and Mathys in Switzerland.
