Minnesota Winter: Ideal Time to Treat Sun Damage

Local spas are seeing an increase in the amount of residents seeking to reverse the effects of sun damage while the snow flies, confirming that now may indeed be the best time for your skin to receive a tune-up.

Dr. Mark Hagberg, owner of the Skin Rejuvenation Clinic in the Minneapolis metro area says that it’s never too late to start turning back the clock on your aging skin. “Excessive exposure to the sun can make a person look older than he or she really is. In addition to deep wrinkles, skin damage creates course, dry skin, freckling, skin discoloration and leathery skin,” he explained. “When a person’s skin has been without sun for a period of time, the damage is more visible to the eye, prompting more people to seek skin care.”

In addition to the increased visibility of sun damage during the winter months, a more important point Dr. Hagberg mentioned is the ease of treatment during the cloudy seasons. “Many methods of treatment require a person to be out of the sun prior to and following treatment,” he said. “Therefore winter treatment makes perfect sense.”

Dr. Elizabeth Hagberg, co-owner of the Skin Rejuvenation Clinic treats sun damage daily and said she typically recommends an IPL (Intense Pulse Light) treatment for sun spots. “Sciton® BBL [IPL] technology utilizes the power of pulsed light to deliver excellent results in photo rejuvenation therapy.” Although Dr. Hagberg says clients can see results after just one treatment, typically a series is recommended for more dramatic results.

IPL treatments are not the only effective treatments in treating sun damage. For sun damage that is not as severe, Dr. Elizabeth said microdermabrasion treatments and peels can provide a much needed boost.
