The History of the Double Bogey Invitational

The Double Bogey Invitational started in 2006 over lunch. Pat Puhl, the founder of the Double Bogey Invitational, launched the golf tournament as a social event that allowed him and his friends from college to get together once a year and play golf. After meeting Eric Friedman - who had recently started the MJF Fund for Cancer Research in honor of his father and mother who he lost to cancer in 1999 and 2005 respectively - the two decided to transform the Double Bogey Invitational into a fundraising event that would benefit cancer research.

After shifting the focus of the 2006 Double Bogey Invitational from simply a social event to a social event that helped a cause, Puhl and Friedman realized in 2009 they had raised over $25,000. They also realized they were selling out the tournament so quickly that it was causing a wait list to form. At this point, they decided, with the help of a group of volunteers, to found Families for a Cure and raise $1 million by the year 2021 through the Double Bogey Invitational and other fundraising efforts. Eight years later the Families for a Cure has raised $750,000 of their $1 million goal and continues to support a wide variety of cancer projects and patients within Ohio and across the world.

Cooper & Friedman's Involvement with the Double Bogey Invitational

Eric Friedman, one of the founders of Families for a Cure who hosts the Double Bogey Invitational, is brothers with Hal Friedman - one of the partners at Cooper & Friedman, PLLC, in Louisville, KY. Eric and Hal both became interested and involved in raising money for cancer research as a way to recognize and honor the memory of their parents, Malcolm and Joy Friedman. Along with Families for a Cure, the law firm has also supported a variety of other non-profits including The American Cancer Society and The Max Gilpin "Beat the Heat" Foundation.

While Eric works as Vice President for Families for a Cure, Hal Friedman sponsors the cancer fundraising event with support from Cooper & Friedman PLLC.
